Being an author, I naturally love reading. Fortunately, my husband and kiddos are avid readers as well. Here is what my preschooler/pre-reader is into this month:

Cars and Trucks and Things that GO
Richard Scarry
Maria Montessori, a renowned Italian educator, recommends leaning into a child’s “sensitivities” (a.k.a. interests or curiosities) at any giving moment and leveraging this heightened interest in order to teach the child other things. I love using this philosophy when selecting books for my children. More often than not, it will yield a hit book for our library. Case in point, my preschool son is currently obsessed with any with wheels. I selected this book for him as a “party favor” for his older brother’s birthday celebration. He immediately loved this book and studying all of the different vehicles pictured. I like how the story documents the pig family’s rather silly road trip to the beach for a picnic. While there are some subtle quips at Pa Pig, the book is quite child friendly and the pictures provide hours of study material for any truck-enthusiast toddler.

The Whale Who Wanted More
Rachel Bright
My preschooler is in the “everything is mine” phase. We gave him this book to help him learn how to find contentment without hoarding stuff. We have noticed mixed results in terms of behavioral change, but he likes to hear this book at least once a day. The mostly rhyming poetry gives the book a nice rhythm (similar to the other books in this series by Bright). I enjoy the rich mix of vocabulary words that Bright uses, hence why we own most of the other books in this series. The pictures are also full of interesting things, which makes it a good book for counting games and playing I-Spy.
